No Compromise, By Design

There is a common assumption that a brewery’s identity comes from a single hand, one master recipe repeated across every bottle. For BBA, this assumption misses the point entirely. “Eight brewers. One latitude. No compromise.” It is more than a tagline — it is the operating principle behind every ale that leaves the BBA brewery.

Unlike most breweries, BBA assigns each release to a single, named brewer, much like a winemaker signs their own cuvée. Every ale in The Grateful Eight carries a name, a philosophy, and a fingerprint that cannot be replicated by anyone else on the team.

Four Foundations

Co-Founder Paul Heaton set the founding philosophy with BBA Nº 1, establishing the standard against which every subsequent chapter would be measured. Cellar Master Dave Hemingway shaped the brand’s patient approach to maturation with BBA Nº 2, proving that restraint is its own form of craftsmanship.

Bass Brewer Sean Welch brought technical discipline to the Altbier tradition with BBA Nº 3, honoring precision over trend. Head of Fermentation David Rotheray engineered the luminous BBA Nº 4, turning fermentation science into something worth savoring slowly.

Three Guest Signatures

Three guest brewers — Briana Corrigan, Jacqui Abbott and Alison Wheeler — were each invited to contribute a permanent signature ale, bringing bold, contemplative and seasonal chapters to the range respectively. Each was chosen not for conformity, but for a distinct point of view worth preserving in the collection permanently.

Briana’s confidence, Jacqui’s reverence, and Alison’s seasonal instinct now sit alongside the brewery’s founding voices — three additions that expand the range without diluting its character.

The Quiet Eighth

Rounding out the team, Head of Operations David Stead ensures every vessel, line and bottle meets the brewery’s uncompromising standard — and, almost as an afterthought, brewed one of the collection’s most radiant ales in BBA Nº 8. It is a fitting reminder that at BBA, precision behind the scenes and brilliance in the glass are rarely separate skills.
